Catherine Austin Window Honoring Alberto Pinto Voted Favorite at LEGENDS 2019
Each year LEGENDS embraces an overarching theme that is expressed in the windows of the member LCDQ shops and showrooms. The theme for LEGENDS 2019 is “Legendary: Icons of Design,” and 43 designers from around the world were invited to create window displays in honor of their favorite design icon.
This year, for the first time, LEGENDS registrants voted for their favorite window on the new LCDQLA app. Catherine Austin of Charlotte, N.C., won the competition with designers Bridgid Coulter and Massucco Warner Miller tying for second place.
Austin chose to honor the late Paris-based designer Alberto Pinto in her exotic window design, which popped with color and intricate pattern. “He was a master of converging cultural aesthetics,” said Austin, who channeled the late designer’s ability to master a union of design from around the world in one beautiful room. Austin’s window at the Janet Yonaty showroom on Melrose had an Orientalist flair, with “Iznik” wallcovering from Iksel, sculpted sofa with Schuyler Samperton pillows, Syrian inlaid furniture, and accessories from Morocco and India.
Bridgid Coulter’s artistic installation at the Una Malan showroom on La Cienega Boulevard was themed to “Women of Color in Decorative Arts • Icons in the Shadows.” Combining organic figures made of mud and metals with textiles in an exquisite way, Coulter paid tribute to the late Iraqi-born architect-designer Zaha Hadid in her statement-making window.
Melissa Warner Rothblum and Julie Massucco Kleiner of Massucco Warner Miller presented a contemporized version of design icon Sister Parish’s trademark chairs and a table ensemble at Hollywood at Home on La Cienega. Their clever window display was backed with a whimsical wallpaper that looked like bookshelves.
First prize winner will receive 2,000 LCDQ Bucks and the two runners up will receive 500 LCDQ Bucks each to spend at an LCDQ shop or showroom.
