The 18th Annual International Los Angeles Photographic Art Exposition opens to the public today at noon at The Barker Hanger at the Santa Monica Airport.  More than 60 galleries from around the world have booths showcasing works from today’s most sought-after shutterbugs.  The fair itself has gained prominence in recent years as photographs have risen in stature as highly collectible pieces of art, and photographers such as Nan Goldin and Andreas Gursky have fully established themselves as bona fide art world stars.  Photos, often printed in series of 4 to 10, compare favorably in price to modern art phenoms such as Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons or Takashi Murakami, which allows less wealthy, often younger, collectors to obtain works by the fields biggest names.

In addition, with dizzying advances in technology, the lines previously delineating art medium from art medium are blurring into irrelevance.  Photographers are spending countless hours in post-production using applications to edit, refine, layer, correct, enhance, … images into spectacularly dense, yet flawlessly clear masterworks.  Photography, long outside the mainstream art world, is now comfortably inside the big tent.
