As most of you know from my previous post, I am obsessed with a particular disposer. Since everything that can be said about the disposer has been said, I am turning my attention to dishwashers. There are so many great products at varying price points, I thought I would share some information about some great new Green and Clean products now on the market.

Today’s dishwashers are substantially more efficient than those built ten to twenty years ago. Kitchen and Bath Business magazine reports that dishwashers built before 1994 use more than ten gallons of water per cycle, while some current Energy Star rated models now use less than 3 gallons. Even non-Energy Star models are about 85% more energy efficient than those models built 20 years ago. And you certainly don’t need to pre-rinse your dishes before putting them in the dishwasher. New technologies such as sensors monitor the soil and impurity levels in the water which tunes the cycle fills and rinsing for heavily soiled cycles.

Dishwashers have gotten eerily quiet as well. Thanks to improved filtration systems, motors are no longer needed to noisily grind up food soils. Insulation is improved and integrated control panels also contribute to the improved quiet operation.

Over the next few weeks, I’ll be doing a series of posts that showcase what I feel are some of the best dishwashers on the market. Stay tuned.
