Welcoming Christopher Farr as a La Cienega Design Quarter Member
One of the newest members of the La Cienega Design Quarter is the Christopher Farr contemporary rug gallery. The London-born Farr and his business partner, Matthew Bourne, are known for revolutionizing contemporary rug design by collaborating with artists whose work they translated to the medium of weaving.
Farr and Bourne, when looking to establish a U.S. outpost in the early 2000s, scoured Los Angeles for the right location. “There’s always been a need for contemporary rugs in the American market and the LCDQ became an obvious choice for us. We wanted to be in the heart of the design district. Being located within steps of our noted peers, professionals and tastemakers in the LCDQ only made sense. And fifteen years later, it’s never been better,” says Christopher Bogucki, who runs the Los Angeles showroom.
“Christopher Farr is well known for re-establishing the contemporary rug as fine art and pushing the notion of the floor as the fifth wall,” says Bogucki. Farr and Bourne have maintained strong bonds with a diverse community of designers and artists with luminaries such as Gary Hume, Sarah Morris, John Pawson, and Claudio Silvestrin for over 25 years. In 2004, they began producing the 1920s rug designs of the late Bauhaus designer Gunta Stölzl, with the Stölzl family’s blessing.
The latest introductions from Christopher Farr involve collaborations with local designers, including Commune and Meg Joannides of MLK Studio. The rug designed by Joannides is made in wool and silk with a Bunuel weave, pictured below. Following the debut of Christopher Farr’s first fabric collection designed by Commune, the highly anticipated rug designs have recently been released this fall.
Christopher Farr is known for the ability to create and customize any installation for contract, hospitality, or residential. All of Farr’s rugs are produced in Turkey utilizing the best accessible yarn, dyes and weavers. They actively support Care & Fair, an organization in India dedicated to the elimination of child labor in the rug industry.
