Sold! The dress Marilyn Monroe wore when she sang “Happy Birthday” to President John F. Kennedy was auctioned off last night for $4.8 million by Julien’s Auctions at Fig & Olive in the LCDQ. Ripley’s Believe It Or Not! purchased the dress with plans to display it at the Odditorium museum in Hollywood.

The iconic dress was part of three days’ worth of Marilyn Monroe-related auctions featuring the Collection of David Gainsborough-Roberts, Property from the Estate of Lee Strasberg, and Property from the Estate of Frieda Hull.

The auction features film costumes representing a significant part of Marilyn’s acting career from Niagara (20th Cent., 1953) to Some Like It Hot (United Artists, 1959). This auction celebrates Monroe’s life as she would have celebrated her 90th birthday this year and consists of film costumes, designer wardrobe and jewelry; personalized gifts from Monroe; documents and personal items once owned by Marilyn Monroe; and the largest collection of Marilyn Monroe ephemera ever offered at auction.

Some of the personal items up for auction were originally sold at Christie’s 1999 and Julien’s Auctions’ 2005 Property From The Estate of Marilyn Monroe auctions.

Auction entry fee to attend the Live Auction is $100 per person (for registered bidders all three days: November 17th, 18th and 19th). 100% of the registration and admission proceeds benefit The Downtown Women’s Center.
